Old, Boring 40 and Happy about It

Tomorrow is my 40th birthday, and I’m kind-of excited. I’ve been looking forward to my 40s since I was 31. No kidding. I remember the moment exactly when I realized that 40 was a magical number – the time when life would finally be manageable.

I was in graduate school and working in a group with three other women (all in their 40s). Another group of students always claimed the best work area for themselves. On this particular night, my group finally got it together and one of the other women saved the space for the rest of us. Well the other group came and crowded her out. No kidding – this is how adults behaved. I was livid! I wanted to do something about it! But my group members stayed calm and just peacefully moved to another area.

I couldn't believe they would allow others to treat them this way. One of the ladies was so patient with me: she placed her hand on mine and said, “When I was your age I would get fired up over these little things too.” It was then that it hit me: older women had it together. I couldn’t wait to be like them.

Good night friends. I go to sleep content tonight knowing that tomorrow I will join a league of wise, older women. I'm so ready.

  2. Have a great birthday!!! One of my favorite quotes by Dr. David Amen is this - "When you are 18 years old you worry about what everyone thinks, when you are 40 "You don't give a darn", when you are 60, you realize that no one was thinking about you at all." They were worried about their own lives. Enjoy each and every moment - not sweating the small stuff.

  3. Happy birthday!

(My 40th birthday saw me finally start going to college--now, seven years later, I am dealing with the challenge of having to make a living as a self-employed writer. For some reason, I still haven't managed to make my life manageable--oh wait, I know why--I am a man. *wink*)

  5. Happy Birthday Suzi! I always remind myself that someone died in every biblical example of a birthday, and if everyone makes it out alive at the end of the day it was a true success! lol

  6. Happy birthday! I turned 40 last year and I didn't think it meant anything until I woke up one day completely unwilling to put up with any more B.S. in my life and, at the same time, knowing which battles were worth fighting. Pick your battles and you win the war. Plus, calmer is better because you focus more on creating what you really want in life and not caring what anyone else thinks about what you're doing.

    Enjoy :-)

  7. I remember when I made 40, I put a banner on the wall saying "Over the Hill and on a Roll". Now, that I'm 55 (nxt month) I'm so excited about the 'senior citizen' discounts.
    Happy Birthday.
